Mammillaria elongata cristata 'Brain Cactus'

If you’re looking for a one-of-a-kind, living Halloween decoration, look no further – Mammillaria elongata cristata ‘Brain Cactus’ more than lives up to its name, adding a spooky element to any home! Thanks to a mutation in the apical meristem, or growth center, of the plant, this variety forms flattened stems that twist and turn against each other, forming a mass described by some as resembling a writhing, tangled snake, and by others as, well, a brain!

With a bright green base color muted by numerous clusters of short, almost fuzzy white spines that deepen to a tan hue along the uppermost ridge of each stem, this variety will reach up to 6 inches high and twice as wide, making a huge statement as a standalone specimen, or as part of a spooky container arrangement. To ensure this level of healthy growth, be sure to provide ‘Brain Cactus’ with plenty of bright to direct sunlight, and take care not to allow excess moisture to accumulate around the stems or roots. To achieve this, utilize a porous soil mixture within a well-draining pot, ensure ample airflow around the stems and soil surface, and adhere to a thorough yet infrequent watering routine. Additionally, always pour the water directly onto the soil surface, to prevent it being trapped within the labyrinth of stems above!

During the winter months (or even around the Halloween festivities!), take steps to protect ‘Brain Cactus’ from frost, which could otherwise result in permanent damage to the intriguingly bizarre stems.

Plant Size & Appearance
Plant sizing is based on the diameter of the nursery pot (2", 2.5", 3", 4" etc), not the plant itself. Plants may be slightly larger or smaller than the pot they are grow in depending on availability or time of year. While we do our best to ship plants as similar to those pictured as possible, please keep in mind that all plants are unique from one to the next, and display color, shape, and growth variation based on current environment, time of year, and other contributing factors. Please note that we ship our plants as dry as possible in the fall and winter months to prevent root rot or freezing. They will plump back up after planting!
