Haworthia turgida has thick, almost finger-like leaves featuring gently pointed tips and crisp margins, together forming a series of loose rosettes that quickly offset to form a mass of rich, lightly speckled green. The leaves themselves closely resemble sea glass in both color and texture, as the soft green veining creates an unreal aesthetic that is seemingly more crystal than plant! While Haworthia turgida will thrive in shadier conditions, when exposed to brighter light the leaves with flush to a reddish hue, quickly reverting to green when returned to a dimmer spot. Reaching only 4 inches in diameter at maturity, this cultivar deserves a place in any succulent collection.

Tolerant of varying light conditions, from partial shade to bright, indirect sun, the only real threat to Haworthia turgida’s success is overwatering. To avoid this fate, and the associated rot and pest issues, be sure to plant this variety using a porous soil mix within a well-draining pot, situated in a location with ample airflow. To prevent ‘wet feet,’ water in accordance with the ‘soak and dry’ method, which dictates providing a thorough drink only once the soil has completely dried through from the last one.

During the spring and early summer months, contented Haworthia turgida will produce stems of petite white blooms with a tubular shape. In return for this display, be sure to shield the leaves from frost during the wintertime, to avoid scarring the thick and water-rich leaves.
