Euphorbia mammillaris f. variegata 'Indian Corn Cob'
DESCRIPTION
Euphorbia mammillaris f. variegata, also known by the common name variegated indian corncob, this cultivar truly does resemble just that! With ribbed stems reaching up to 14 inches in height, layered in hues of cream, light green, and even emerald, the real show occurs in bright sunlight when the tips of each stem begin to blush bright pink. Over time E. mammillaris f. variegata will produce a dense ‘shrublet’ of stems, making this variety an exceptional addition to container arrangements or temperate landscapes. Take care, however, when handling this variety, as it possesses both white spines and a sticky latex sap within its stems that can cause irritation when brought into contact with the skin. Use of gloves or even a thickly layered piece of newspaper will allow for safe and incident free potting of this eye-catching plant!
Though it may closely resemble a cactus, this plant is actually part of the Euphorbiaceae – though its care needs are nonetheless quite similar. Bright sunlight, paired with porous soil within a well-draining pot and ample airflow around the stems, will round out the simple environmental factors this specimen requires for success. Adhering to a thorough but infrequent watering routine, in which the plant is watered until the excess runs from the bottom of the pot only when the soil has completely dried from its last drink, will take care of the rest.
Hardy only to Zone 9, be sure to protect this variety from freezing temperatures, which could otherwise cause permanent damage to the stems – and as the weather warms in the spring, expect to see yellow blooms emerge!
PLANT SIZING & APPEARANCE
Plant sizing is based on the diameter of the nursery pot (2", 2.5", 3", 4" etc), not the plant itself. Plants may be slightly larger or smaller than the pot they are grow in depending on availability or time of year. While we do our best to ship plants as similar to those pictured as possible, please keep in mind that all plants are unique from one to the next, and display color, shape, and growth variation based on current environment, time of year, and other contributing factors. Please note that we ship our plants as dry as possible in the fall and winter months to prevent root rot or freezing. They will plump back up after planting!
