DESCRIPTION

Senecio rowleyanus ‘String of Pearls’ variegata is a quirky and cascading succulent, with bright green and white round leaves. Originating from southern Africa, where they grow as a trailing groundcover over rock outcroppings, each stem can potentially reach several feet in length. The unique, pearl-shaped leaves are an adaptation to survive drought conditions in their native desert home, and each leaf has a crescent-shaped “window” that allows light to enter so photosynthesis can proceed more readily.

‘String of Pearls’ prefers bright, indirect light, to avoid sunburning, and a room without chilly drafts, as cold air can cause leaves to drop. The shallow root systems of this plant predisposes it to rot, so fast-draining soil in a pot with sufficient drainage is critical. It is also important not to let any of the “pearls” rest on wet soil for too long. Keeping the soil at the same level as the top of the pot, to allow for airflow around the leaves, can go a long way toward eliminating rot issues. Water thoroughly but only when the soil is completely dry, and even more infrequently during the winter months, as the plant shifts into dormancy.

A happy ‘String of Pearls’ will grace you with tiny white flowers that resemble pom-poms and smell like cinnamon. To encourage spring flowers, cut back on water and keep the plant in cooler, but not freezing or drafty temperatures (around 60 degrees) during the winter months.

It is important to note that the sap of the plant can cause skin irritation, or vomiting if ingested, so wash your hands after handling and use caution around small children or curious pets that may wish to take a bite!

    PLANT SIZING & APPEARANCE

Plant sizing is based on the diameter of the nursery pot (2", 2.5", 3", 4" etc), not the plant itself. Plants may be slightly larger or smaller than the pot they are grow in depending on availability or time of year. While we do our best to ship plants as similar to those pictured as possible, please keep in mind that all plants are unique from one to the next, and display color, shape, and growth variation based on current environment, time of year, and other contributing factors. Please note that we ship our plants as dry as possible in the fall and winter months to prevent root rot or freezing. They will plump back up after planting!
