Echeveria 'Culebra', a fascinating variety created by famed hybridizer Dick Wright, features loosely formed, 7-inch rosettes of powdery blue leaves with irregular pinks margins. The narrow, elongated leaves are made all the more intriguing by the fact that they are each topped with a bumpy ‘caruncle,’ which causes the leaf margins to curl downward in a tubular shape, lending the plant the appearance of a cobra that is poised to strike!
Despite its unique growth form, ‘Culebra’s care resembles that of many other Echeveria. Bright light is crucial to maintaining its coloration as well as its compact growth habit, while porous soil and a well-draining pot are vital for avoiding issues with dampness. Watering thoroughly but infrequently, in accordance with the ‘soak and dry’ method, will further shield against issues with rot or pests, as will ample airflow around the leaves and soil surface.
During the winter months, be sure to shield ‘Culebra’ from freezing temperatures, as it is not cold hardy below Zone 9.
