Opuntia microdasys var. albospina 'White Bunny Ears'

Opuntia microdasys var. albospina 'White Bunny Ears' is a stunning cactus variety with broad, rounded green pads is native to Mexico, where it can reach 2-3 feet tall and up to 6 feet wide, with a dense clustering growth habit! It has small, hair-like spines called glochids located in white clusters across the surface of the pads, so care must be taken when handling this variety.

Bright sun from a south-facing window is the best bet to meet the high light needs of this cactus, and very porous soil in a pot with exceptional drainage is an absolute must. Like many cacti, it does not require frequent water, and damp soil can predispose it to rot, so be sure to water thoroughly only once the soil has had a chance to completely dry. Further, to help mimic its native environment, avoid placing it in a humid room of your home, such as the bathroom or kitchen.

Large, yellow flowers will later turn into small red fruits, as the plant matures – exposure to cool temperatures of around 50-55 degrees during the winter months will help encourage springtime blooms. While cool winter temperatures are a positive, be sure to protect from weather at or below freezing, as this plant is hardy only to Zone 9.

For those with young children or pets, please note that the glochids can cause skin or eye irritation when handled, so be sure to place your cactus out of reach from little hands or paws!
