Similar to a prickly pear, this cactus forms broad, fleshy pads in a rich green hue, from which new growth emerges in a pattern truly resembling its namesake! The newest pads on the cactus will begin as a bright, lime green before deepening in color with maturity – and all of the pads both new and old are covered with furry tan areoles from which tiny spines called ‘glochids’ emerge.

The shrubby growth form of this plant can reach up to 3 feet tall and 6 feet wide at maturity, provided it is exposed to ample bright, direct sunlight. Given the right conditions, large yellow blooms will appear each summer, giving way to reddish fruits. Like most cacti, this variety does not favor excess moisture in its environment, making a thorough yet infrequent watering routine, paired with a porous soil mix within a well-draining pot, an absolute must.

Though it is hardy only to Zone 9 and cannot tolerate much frost, a period of cooler winter temperatures in the range of 45-55 degrees will induce the best flowering as the weather warms in the spring. Furthermore, take note that the tiny, spiny glochids can cause irritation to the eyes and skin, so be sure to handle it with the appropriate precautions!

All plants are shipped bare-root with the exception of House Plants and Plant Club Subscription Boxes. House plants and succulents will ship from separate locations and may arrive at different times. Orders ship Monday-Friday each week. Please allow 1-3 business days for your order to be processed. We ship within the USA and its outlying territories ONLY. Read our full policy here.

Plant sizing is based on the diameter of the nursery pot (2", 2.5", 3", 4" etc), not the plant itself. Plants may be slightly larger or smaller than the pot they are grow in depending on availability or time of year. While we do our best to ship plants as similar to those pictured as possible, please keep in mind that all plants are unique from one to the next, and display color, shape, and growth variation based on current environment, time of year, and other contributing factors. Please note that we ship our plants as dry as possible in the fall and winter months to prevent root rot or freezing. They will plump back up after planting!
