Opuntia microdasys 'Angel Wing,’ is a stunning cactus variety with broad, rounded green pads is native to Mexico, where it can reach 2-3 feet tall and up to 6 feet wide, with a dense clustering growth habit! While ‘Angel Wing’ is a spineless cactus, it does have small, hair-like spikes called glochids located in white clusters across the surface of the pads, so care must be taken when handling this variety.
Bright sun from a south-facing window is the best bet to meet the high light needs of this cactus, and very porous soil in a pot with exceptional drainage is an absolute must. Like many cacti, it does not require frequent water, and damp soil can predispose it to rot, so be sure to water thoroughly only once the soil has had a chance to completely dry. Further, to help mimic its native environment, avoid placing ‘Angel Wing’ in a humid room of your home, such as the bathroom or kitchen.
Large, yellow flowers will later turn into small red fruits, as the plant matures – exposure to cool temperatures of around 50-55 degrees during the winter months will help encourage springtime blooms. While cool winter temperatures are a positive, be sure to protect from weather at or below freezing, as this plant is hardy only to Zone 9.
For those with young children or pets, please note that the glochids can cause skin or eye irritation when handled, so be sure to place your ‘Angel Wing’ out of reach from little hands or paws!

All plants are shipped bare-root with the exception of House Plants and Plant Club Subscription Boxes. House plants and succulents will ship from separate locations and may arrive at different times. Orders ship Monday-Friday each week. Please allow 1-3 business days for your order to be processed. We ship within the USA and its outlying territories ONLY. Read our full policy here.
Plant sizing is based on the diameter of the nursery pot (2", 2.5", 3", 4" etc), not the plant itself. Plants may be slightly larger or smaller than the pot they are grow in depending on availability or time of year. While we do our best to ship plants as similar to those pictured as possible, please keep in mind that all plants are unique from one to the next, and display color, shape, and growth variation based on current environment, time of year, and other contributing factors. Please note that we ship our plants as dry as possible in the fall and winter months to prevent root rot or freezing. They will plump back up after planting!
