DESCRIPTION

Embodying the rugged beauty of its native South American landscapes, Opuntia elata stands as a testament to the resilience and elegance of succulents. This striking species, commonly known as the towering prickly pear, showcases pads that are a vibrant mix of blue-green hues, creating a stunning visual contrast against its sharp, golden spines. The pads of Opuntia elata are thick and fleshy, serving not only as water reservoirs but also as a unique canvas for the play of sunlight and shadow.

Reaching up to an impressive 10 feet in height when given the right conditions, this plant commands attention in any setting. Its stature is complemented by the spectacular display of yellow flowers that bloom in late spring to early summer, attracting pollinators and adding a burst of color to its already fascinating form. Following the blooms, the plant produces edible fruits that gradually ripen to a deep red, offering a sweet treat for both humans and wildlife.

Perfect for xeriscaping or as a standalone specimen in a drought-tolerant garden, Opuntia elata thrives in full sun and well-draining soil, showcasing its best growth and flower production. It's also well-suited for large containers, where its imposing silhouette can be fully appreciated. Despite its formidable appearance, it's relatively easy to care for, requiring minimal water once established and proving resilient against pests and diseases.

With its blend of architectural form, vibrant blooms, and striking pads, Opuntia elata is a captivating addition to any succulent collection or garden, offering a slice of South American wilderness to your outdoor space.

PLANT SIZING & APPEARANCE

Plant sizing is based on the diameter of the nursery pot (2", 2.5", 3", 4" etc), not the plant itself. Plants may be slightly larger or smaller than the pot they are grow in depending on availability or time of year. While we do our best to ship plants as similar to those pictured as possible, please keep in mind that all plants are unique from one to the next, and display color, shape, and growth variation based on current environment, time of year, and other contributing factors. Please note that we ship our plants as dry as possible in the fall and winter months to prevent root rot or freezing. They will plump back up after planting!
