With a staunchly upright growth pattern, blue torch cactus forms a typically singular columnar stem with a hazy blue coloration and pronounced ridges, each of which is highlighted by regularly spaced, creamy white areoles from which long, tan spines emerge. In the wild landscapes of its Brazilian homeland, this variety can reach a maximum height of over 30 feet, developing branches all along its incredible central stem. Within our homes, however, this slow grower will likely top out in the ballpark of 12 inches, limited by light availability and pot size.

Like most cacti adapted to arid landscapes, it not only tolerates but prefers full sun conditions, making a sunny west or south facing windowsill a must if this specimen is to thrive as a houseplant. Beyond this, its needs are quite simple – a porous cactus soil mix, a well-draining pot, and a thorough yet infrequent watering routine will provide the foundation for success with blue torch cactus, ensuring that its coloration and upright growth can provide high contrast within any succulent arrangement or temperate rock garden for years (or even decades) to come.

Hardy only to Zone 10, it requires protection from frost during the winter months. During the warmest months of the year, this variety can produce large, white blooms that will give way to bright pink fruits!

All plants are shipped bare-root with the exception of House Plants and Plant Club Subscription Boxes. House plants and succulents will ship from separate locations and may arrive at different times. Orders ship Monday-Friday each week. Please allow 1-3 business days for your order to be processed. We ship within the USA and its outlying territories ONLY. Read our full policy here.

Plant sizing is based on the diameter of the nursery pot (2", 2.5", 3", 4" etc), not the plant itself. Plants may be slightly larger or smaller than the pot they are grow in depending on availability or time of year. While we do our best to ship plants as similar to those pictured as possible, please keep in mind that all plants are unique from one to the next, and display color, shape, and growth variation based on current environment, time of year, and other contributing factors. Please note that we ship our plants as dry as possible in the fall and winter months to prevent root rot or freezing. They will plump back up after planting!
