Similar in growth form to its wholly green cousin, this variegated version of the South African native features firm leaves in tones of cream and lime green, with horizontal white, bumpy stripes on the underside of each leaf. With an upward growth habit, each fleshy leaf comes to a tapered point that will flush an apricot tone in brighter sunlight, with the entire slow-growing specimen reaching only 8 inches tall and wide at maturity.
Variegated ‘Zebra Plant’s ability to not only tolerate, but thrive, in partial shade conditions makes it extremely well suited to life in a less sun-drenched space – though reduced levels of chlorophyll does mean that it is not quite as shade tolerant as non-variegated varieties. With typical succulent water needs, this variety will thrive when watered according to the ‘soak and dry’ method, and prefers porous soil within a well-draining pot. Though it is not prone to many pests, good ventilation around the leaves and soil surface will help to ward off any signs of rot.
Variegated ‘Zebra Plant’ is not cold hardy beyond Zone 10, and must be protected from freezing temperatures – though when this and its other key requirements are met, expect a readily offsetting plant sure to add contrast to any succulent collection.
