With a mesmerizing array of blue, green, or even purple striation all around its distinctly spherical stem, as well as dark lines of minute spines dotted along the crest of each rib, it is clear where Euphorbia obesa ‘Basketball Plant’ gets its common name! Eventually reaching up to 8 inches in height, and slightly less in diameter, this show-stopping plant also sports clusters of yellow and pink blooms during the summer months, which then give way to small and angular fruits.
This South African native prefers conditions reminiscent of its indigenous environment – namely brightly sunny and very dry. As such, be sure to place ‘Basketball Plant’ in a full sun location, such as a southern or western-facing windowsill, and water thoroughly but very infrequently. To further protect against the issues associated with overwatering, such as rot, utilize a porous soil mix within a well-draining pot, and ensure ample airflow around the stem and soil surface. Finally, during the winter months, care must be taken to shield the fleshy stem from freezing temperatures, which could otherwise result in permanent damage.
Like all Euphorbia, ‘Basketball Plant’ contains a sticky latex sap within its stem that can cause a toxic response when brought into contact with the skin, mouth, or eyes. As such, be sure to keep this unique specimen away from curious children or pets, who may otherwise be drawn to its whimsical appearance.

All plants are shipped bare-root with the exception of Plant Club Subscription Boxes. Orders ship Monday-Friday each week. Please allow 1-3 business days for your order to be processed. We ship within the USA and its outlying territories ONLY.
Plant sizing is based on the diameter of the nursery pot (2", 2.5", 3", 4" etc), not the plant itself. Plants may be slightly larger or smaller than the pot they are grow in depending on availability or time of year. While we do our best to ship plants as similar to those pictured as possible, please keep in mind that all plants are unique from one to the next, and display color, shape, and growth variation based on current environment, time of year, and other contributing factors. Please note that we ship our plants as dry as possible in the fall and winter months to prevent root rot or freezing. They will plump back up after planting!
