Hoodia gordonii 'Bushman's Hat'

Size

Hoodia gordonii 'Bushman's Hat' is a rare South African and Namibian native that i s truly unique amongst succulents, in the appearance of both its stems and its bizarre blooms. The heavily branching, rounded arms of 'Bushman's Hat' are a dusty blue color, with bumpy ridges heavily dotted with cream-hued spines. Over time, the plant will form a large mass of stems, especially when planted outdoors in a temperate climate. Most noteworthy of all, however, are the blooms of Hoodia gordonii, which are spherical in shape and recurved along the edges of the singular petal. Featuring shades of white, tan, and mauve surrounding a black center, the blooms also release a distinctive, rotting odor designed to attract their primary pollinator – flies!

Despite its otherworldly blooms, ‘Bushman’s Hat’ actually requires relatively straightforward care. Full sunlight is a must to encourage both healthy growth and flowering, so if you are intending to grow this specimen indoors, be sure to plan its location accordingly – and if you are planning to grow Hoodia gordoniidirectly in your native soil outdoors, it is worth noting that it can indeed survive the occasional (but not constant) frost.

Despite this relative hardiness, ‘Bushman’s Hat’ does exhibit a proneness to root rot when subjected to excess moisture. As such, be sure to utilize a porous soil mix within a well-draining pot, ensure ample airflow around the leaves and soil surface, and employ a thorough but infrequent watering routine.
