A quite rare cultivar, E. hauscha ‘Crested Red Torch’ cristata forms a fan of bright green color, amply textured by dense, undulating ridges and tan wooly tubercles from which clusters of creamy spines emerge. A mutation in the apical meristem, or growth center, of the plant causes the stem to develop its shell-like shape, which adds character and whimsy to any space of which it is a part!

Despite it strange growth form, it possesses the same easy care requirements as most cacti. Bright sunlight is a must, though be sure to acclimate this specimen to full sun slowly, to avoid burning its stem. To minimize issues with rot, especially in plants whose stem rests directly on the soil, be sure to emphasize the quick drainage of any excess water – chiefly through a porous soil mixture, a well draining pot, and ample airflow across the soil surface. Water thoroughly but infrequently, only providing a drink once the soil has dried through from the last one.

Hardy only to Zone 9, never allow it to be exposed to freezing temperatures, which could otherwise cause permanent damage to the unique stem.

All plants are shipped bare-root with the exception of Bulk Succulent Packs, House Plants, and Plant Club Subscription Boxes. House plants and succulents will ship from separate locations and may arrive at different times. Orders ship Monday-Friday each week. Please allow 1-3 business days for your order to be processed. We ship within the USA and its outlying territories ONLY. Read our full policy here.

Plant sizing is based on the diameter of the nursery pot (2", 2.5", 3", 4" etc), not the plant itself. Plants may be slightly larger or smaller than the pot they are grow in depending on availability or time of year. While we do our best to ship plants as similar to those pictured as possible, please keep in mind that all plants are unique from one to the next, and display color, shape, and growth variation based on current environment, time of year, and other contributing factors. Please note that we ship our plants as dry as possible in the fall and winter months to prevent root rot or freezing. They will plump back up after planting!
