With a compact, spherical growth form accented by numerous undulating, swirling ridges of deep green, the stem of Ferocactus 'Devil's Tongue Barrel' is intriguing all on its own – add in the white-tufted areoles from which sprays of bright red spines emerge, and it is no surprise why “Devil’s Tongue Barrel’ is on the must-have list of so many succulent collectors! The spines, which are slightly flattened and arch away from a central axis, are not the only point of contrast, as huge blooms of bright pink or yellow will emerge as the weather cools in the fall months, followed by small fruits. Reaching up to 12 inches tall at maturity, this slow grower will add layers of texture and color to your home or garden for years to come.

Like most cacti, “Devil’s Tongue Barrel’ prefers bright light accompanied by periods of intense drought, as is the case in its native Mexican desert. To replicate this environment, be sure to situate your plant in a southern or western exposure, and pot within a well-draining container filled with extremely porous soil mix. Water thoroughly but infrequently, in accordance with the ‘soak and dry’ method, to help avoid ills such as rot or pests.

Hardy only to Zone 10, ‘Devil’s Tongue Barrel’ will not tolerate frost, and prefers temperatures well above 40 degrees.

All plants are shipped bare-root with the exception of House Plants and Plant Club Subscription Boxes. House plants and succulents will ship from separate locations and may arrive at different times. Orders ship Monday-Friday each week. Please allow 1-3 business days for your order to be processed. We ship within the USA and its outlying territories ONLY. Read our full policy here.

Plant sizing is based on the diameter of the nursery pot (2", 2.5", 3", 4" etc), not the plant itself. Plants may be slightly larger or smaller than the pot they are grow in depending on availability or time of year. While we do our best to ship plants as similar to those pictured as possible, please keep in mind that all plants are unique from one to the next, and display color, shape, and growth variation based on current environment, time of year, and other contributing factors. Please note that we ship our plants as dry as possible in the fall and winter months to prevent root rot or freezing. They will plump back up after planting!
